If you're removing stumps on a job site or clearing land on your property, a stump grinder is the only machine that eliminates the stump completely — below grade, roots and all. At ForestProGear, we carry professional stump grinders built for contractors and landowners who need reliable cutting capacity, not weekend equipment dressed up as commercial machines.

Our lineup runs from a 134-lb. mini grinder that loads into a truck bed without a trailer, through to a 500-lb. hydrostatic self-propelled unit that handles 24-inch stumps above grade on commercial job sites. Every unit ships free, with no sales tax.

How a Stump Grinder Actually Works

A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel — fitted with carbide teeth — to chip away the stump and root system below ground level. The operator sweeps the wheel across the stump in controlled passes, grinding it down to wood chips 6 to 18 inches below grade depending on the unit. No digging, no chemicals, no waiting months for the stump to rot.

The cutting wheel is the heart of the machine. Our lineup runs Greenteeth® 500 and 700 Series teeth — a 3-in-1 system where each tooth rotates in three 120-degree increments for a fresh cutting edge without replacement. On a busy day of multiple stumps, this means the machine keeps cutting while competitors are in the shop changing hardware.

Choosing the Right Stump Grinder for Your Operation

The right unit depends on access, stump diameter, and daily volume. Here's how our lineup breaks down:

Mini stump grinder — 6HP Honda GX200, 134 lbs., foldable for truck bed transport. Cuts stumps up to 10 inches above grade and 9 inches below. Ideal for landscapers and homeowners who need to remove smaller stumps without trailer logistics.

Entry-level walk-behind — 14HP Kohler engine, 9 high-speed carbide Tri-Cut dual bolted teeth, 12-inch solid steel cutting head. Cuts 3.5 inches wide per pass, 9 inches above and below grade. Direct belt drive eliminates clutch slippage for consistent power delivery.

Mid-range walk-behind — 13HP Honda GX390, 300 lbs., Greenteeth® 700 Series, 20 inches above grade / 16 inches below. Built for backyard access — fits through residential gates and narrow walkways where larger units cannot operate.

Swivel walk-behind — same 13HP Honda GX390 platform with swivel action technology. Lock the wheels with a single lever and sweep the cutting head across the stump in a natural arc — less repositioning, less fatigue, faster completion per stump. Unique side discharge frame keeps grindings away from the operator.

Commercial walk-behind — 20HP Honda GX630 electric start, 400 lbs., 4-groove direct belt drive. Cuts 20 inches above grade and 16 inches below. Five-position adjustable handlebar for full-day operator comfort.

Self-propelled commercial unit — 20HP Honda GX630 electric start, hydrostatic drive, 500 lbs. Variable speed forward and reverse from the handlebars — no manual pushing on slopes or uneven terrain. Cuts 24 inches above grade and 18 inches below. Built for professional contractors running multiple stumps per day.

Cutting Capacity, Tooth System & Wheel Diameter

Our stump grinders run 9-5/8 inch to 14 inch cutting wheels depending on the unit, handling stumps from residential yard removals through large commercial clearing jobs. Cutting depth ranges from 9 inches below grade on mini units to 18 inches below grade on the self-propelled commercial model.

Greenteeth® 700 Series teeth feature a concave "dish" cutting edge that shears rather than shreds — cleaner cuts, less resistance, lower fuel consumption per stump. Each tooth rotates in three 120-degree increments, giving you three fresh cutting edges per tooth before replacement.

Walk-Behind vs. Self-Propelled — Which One Do You Need?

For most residential and light commercial work, a walk-behind is the right choice. At 134 to 400 lbs., they navigate tight backyards, fit through standard gates, and load onto a trailer without specialized equipment. The 13HP and 20HP Honda GX390/GX630 walk-behind units handle the vast majority of residential stump removal jobs without limitation.

For high-volume commercial operations — landscaping contractors, land clearing crews, tree services running multiple jobs per day — the hydrostatic self-propelled unit eliminates operator fatigue and repositioning time on large stumps. The variable speed drive handles slopes and uneven terrain where a walk-behind requires significantly more physical effort.

Honda & Kohler Engines — Built for Extended Use

Every stump grinder in our lineup runs a Honda GX series or Kohler Command PRO engine — commercial-grade power units built to tighter tolerances than consumer engines. Honda GX engines feature cast iron cylinder sleeves, ball bearing crankshafts, and oil alert systems that shut the engine down automatically before oil pressure drops to a damaging level.

The Kohler Command PRO CH440 on our entry-level unit delivers 22.7 Gross ft. lbs. of torque — enough to spin a 12-inch, 50-lb. cutting head at 3,600 RPM through hardwood stumps without hesitation.
